Unfamiliar Land

Since 2022, I have been creating a series of unplanned, ephemeral land works during my travels. These works reflect the unique landscape of the places where they are made.

The title and work refer to mankind’s increasingly dislocated relationship with the natural world.

“Bridge”

Portland, Oregon. This sculpture represents a path between the conscious human world and the unconscious world. I laid moss covered branches of varying sizes across an existing armature that spanned this ravine.

“River”

Stanley, Idaho. Made from the dead sticks of yellow pine trees, “River” alludes the flow and cycle of life. I gathered sticks of varying sizes and created a sculpture that conjures notions of a skeleton or fossil - the eventual fate of all living things on earth.

“Island”

Lake Vermillion, Minnesota. “Island” reflects the glacier created landscape of the boundary waters of Northern Minnesota. I created a small replica of the ubiquitous islands that are found here from cedar logs, birch bark, moss, and slate.

“Deer Kill Adobe”

Fort Davis, Texas. Deer Kill Adobe reflects the process of decay as well as a need of all living things-shelter. I came across dried algae from a creek wash and placed it upon a branch armature that was already existing in the wash.
